Introducing IoT to Data Science

In this chapter we will look at the Internet of Things (IoT) from the perspective of data scientists.  What is IoT and how can it help us expand our data science capabilities?

IoT experts are invited to look away and jump to the next chapter.  For everyone else, the purpose of this chapter is to provide a working understanding of what IoT is, as well as a few other related and key concepts, such as the Cloud.

As per a paradigm that persists throughout the book, IoT is important to us purely as a means to expand our data science toolkit.  Our goal is to use it, and in this chapter we consider how it might be of use to us.  We are not learning about it for the sake of it, and we are not interested in elements of it that are irrelevant to achieving a set of outcomes that are alluded to in the chapter.
